Over the past few years manufacturers have replaced the old style
mechanical dashboards with new digital ones. The main reasons for this are down to cost and reliability. These
days it is cheaper to build an electronic dashboard than the old mechanical style dash boards. Unfortunately this
new technology has it's own set of problems. Electrical pulses in the car's electrical system can cause the data
in the dashboards onboard chip to become corrupt. This could happen for example, if the vehicles battery has become
discharged and the car was then jump started. This in turn causes the wrong mileage to be displayed. Another problem
may arise if you are forced to replace your speedo with a new or second-hand unit due to failure. Once again an
incorrect reading will be displayed. This will make selling your car very difficult. If the new reading is low
then the purchaser may think you have clocked the speedo. If the reading is high then the value will be lower.
